Early Management & Prevention of Heat Illness

A research and evidence based learning approach to the early management and prevention of heat illness as outlined by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association’s (NATA) 2015 Position Statement regarding Exertional Heat Illnesses. This course will review the common heat illnesses and discuss proper prevention and management techniques. During the program, the epidemiology of heat illnesses will be explored and related to the high school athletic training setting. A distinction will be made between other illnesses and diseases that have similar signs and symptoms of exertional heat illnesses.

- List the 4 most common exertional heat illnesses
- Develop an evidenced based prevention protocol for prevention of exertional heat illnesses.
- Understand the difference in presentation and treatment for heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
This presentation will discuss an evidenced-based approach to the evaluation of a variety of exertional heat illnesses while discussing methods of prevention and treatment. It will also review the importance of spreading awareness of exertional heat illness signs and symptoms amongst the medical personnel, coaching staff, administration, and most importantly amongst activity/sport participants.
