Making and Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

We are a few days into 2017 and I’m sure many of us have already given great thought to our New Year’s Resolutions and more importantly how to keep them. Below are some tips that will help you to succeed!

Set Goals- People who set goals are over 80% more likely to actually accomplish them than people who don’t. There is an old saying: “A goal without a plan is only a dream”.
Make a Plan- Once you have your goals written down then it is time to develop a plan to get there. A clear and concise step-by-step plan will make it much easier to stay on track and accomplish your goals.
Be Persistent- There are going to be roadblocks along the way which will threaten to halt your progress. Don’t let them! Be persistent in the pursuit of your goals.
Be Patient- Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither are your goals. It will take time to get to where you want to go and to accomplish what you set out to do. Always keep the big picture in mind.
Be Accountable- Even the most disciplined person will have periods of laziness or lack of motivation. If you have someone to hold you accountable then it is much harder to get off track.
Stay Engaged- It is hard in our “microwaveable instant gratification” society to stay engaged and be focused on a goal. Remember anything worth having is worth working hard for.
Enjoy the Process- As with most things accomplishing a big goal or making a lifestyle change is not all about the destination but also about the journey to get there. You learn the most about yourself as a person on these journeys so try to enjoy them as they are happening. It isn’t always going to be unicorns and rainbows, you will have to take the good along with the bad!

Remember the calendar doesn’t have to say January 1 for you to make a change. The best time to start working on the new you is now, not next week or next month.
