Understanding AT

What is Athletic Training?

Athletic training is a specialized healthcare field focused on enhancing performance and preventing, diagnosing, and treating injuries that occur during physical activity. Athletic training is ideal for professional athletes, physically active individuals and workers with physically demanding jobs who are at a greater risk for injury.

Why is Athletic Training Important?

Athletic training helps reduce the risk of injury, supports faster and safer recovery, and improves performance in general. It ensures athletes and non-athletes return to activity with the strength, mobility, and confidence they need to succeed—whether on the field, the workplace or in everyday life.

This service is available at select locations. Please contact your preferred clinic for more information.

What Does an Athletic Trainer Do?

Athletic trainers work together with physicians as part of care teams. ATs offer patient care through:

Risk Reduction, Wellness and Education

ATs promote healthy lifestyles and wellness for patients and their communities. They also focus on mitigating the risk of injury and illnesses.

Assessment, Evaluation and Diagnosis

ATs have medical training to diagnose injuries and illnesses related to their field of expertise. They can refer you to a specialist if your case warrants further evaluation.

Critical Incident Management

ATs are trained to handle both minor and life-threatening injuries and illnesses. They are first-responders with strong expertise in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions.

Therapeutic Intervention

ATs apply therapeutic exercise, manual techniques and therapeutic modalities to rehabilitate and recondition injuries and illnesses.

Professional Responsibility and administration

ATs also have non-clinical but important duties to ensure quality, ethical care and effective healthcare operations. This includes keeping accurate medical records, maintaining patient confidentiality, following regulations, collaborating with other healthcare providers, and adhering to professional ethics standards.

Does Insurance Cover Athletic Training?

Insurance may cover athletic training services if they are deemed medically necessary. For example, if an athletic trainer is part of a rehabilitation plan following an injury. Make sure to review your policy and consult with your insurance provider to determine if you have coverage and how much. If you don’t have coverage, keep in mind that some employers offer wellness programs that include athletic training benefits.

We can help you verify your insurance benefits to make sure you get the most out of your plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Athletic Training

Physical therapists focus on treating a wide range of patients to improve mobility, regain function and manage pain. Physical therapy can help those recovering from surgeries, chronic conditions, or neurological disorders, among other things. Athletic training specializes in injury prevention, emergency care, and rehabilitation of athletes and physically active individuals.

Physical therapists are not inherently trained to be athletic trainers as their educational paths are distinct. Some professionals may hold dual credentials, but this requires separate degrees and certifications.

Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals. ATs must graduate from an accredited master’s program or otherwise meet the requirements set by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC) . Personal trainers focus on general fitness goals. Unless they hold additional certifications, they are not typically prepared to assist with injury prevention, rehabilitation or reconditioning (and other critical areas like emergency and injury care).
