Rebuild, Retrain, Return

What is Return to Play?

Return to Play (RTP) is a structured, sport-specific therapy program designed to prepare individuals for the physical and mental demands of athletic performance after injury. Like general rehabilitation, RTP focuses on agility, strength, balance, neuromuscular control, and movement mechanics to reduce the risk of reinjury. It emphasizes sport-specific demands based on the patient’s needs and goals. At PT Solutions, our licensed therapists collaborate with referring physicians and use evidence-based performance benchmarks to guide your recovery at every stage.

Why Choose PT Solutions for Return to Play?

We know the final steps of recovery can feel just as challenging as the beginning. That’s why our Return to Play program is built on personalized care, expert guidance, and trust. Here’s what makes us different:

  • Specialized Clinical Teams: Our sports rehab professionals include physical therapists and athletic trainers with deep experience in orthopedic recovery and return-to-sport care.
  • Performance-Focused Progressions: We use movement screening, strength and agility testing, and real-world drills to track your readiness and adjust your plan accordingly.
  • Athlete-Centered Approach: From mindset to movement, our team supports every aspect of your transition—so you feel physically and mentally ready to return to sport.

For Athletes Who Aren’t Done Yet

Who Benefits from Our Return-to-Play Program?

Return to Play is ideal for patients who have completed physical therapy or post-surgical rehab and need support transitioning back to high-demand movement. To qualify, patients typically:

  • Have experienced a musculoskeletal injury or orthopedic surgery
  • Have specific active goals that involve sport or specific exercise
  • Need testing and training to ensure sport-specific performance readiness
  • Want to reduce risk of reinjury with structured progression

Common Injuries Treated in Return to Play

  • ACL & MCL Tears: These knee injuries are common in sports that involve cutting, pivoting, and jumping. We guide athletes through progressive strength training, agility drills, and validated testing to ensure safe return to sport after injuries or conditions.
  • Concussions: A full recovery from concussion goes beyond rest. Our program includes vestibular therapy, balance work, and a gradual return-to-activity progression, with close monitoring to support cognitive and physical recovery.
  • Achilles Injuries: Whether it’s tendinitis or a full rupture, Achilles injuries require focused rehab. We help restore strength, flexibility, and explosive movement to safely return to running, jumping, and change-of-direction tasks.
  • Elbow Injuries: Common in sports like baseball, golf, and tennis, elbow injuries need a targeted approach. We focus on arm strength, joint mobility, and sport-specific mechanics to reduce pain and support return to throwing or swinging.
  • Shoulder Injuries: Shoulder dislocations, rotator cuff tears, and labral injuries can limit upper body performance. Our rehab focuses on restoring strength, range of motion, and shoulder control for overhead and contact sports.
  • Hip Injuries: From sprains and strains to labral tears, hip injuries affect movement and power. We combine mobility work, core stabilization, and functional strength training to help athletes return to high-performance movement.

Coverage Basics

Does Insurance Cover Return to Play?

PT Solutions accepts most major insurance plans for physical therapy, and in many cases, Return to Play services are covered under physical therapy benefits if medically necessary. Our team will verify your benefits in advance and help you understand any out-of-pocket costs before starting care.

If our RTP program are not covered, we offer flexible self-pay options and performance training packages designed to fit your recovery goals and budget.

Finish Strong

Why Return to Play Matters

Healing doesn’t end when pain subsides—it ends when you can return to movement with confidence. Without targeted performance training and return-to-sport testing, the risk of reinjury rises significantly. Our Return to Play program helps ensure that your body is truly ready to meet the demands of competition—or simply get back to the activities you love most.

At PT Solutions, we believe recovery is a continuum. We’ll be there for every rep, every sprint, and every milestone that leads to your full return.
