Cranial & Facial Pain

Cranial and facial pain refers to discomfort in the head, face, jaw, temples, or scalp that can originate from muscles, joints, nerves, or structures in the neck and jaw. Common sources include TMJ dysfunction, cervicogenic headaches, trigeminal nerve irritation, and myofascial trigger points. Physical therapy addresses cranial and facial pain by improving cervical spine mobility, correcting postural contributors, releasing muscle tension through manual therapy, and retraining jaw and neck movement patterns.

Understanding Head Pain

Visual changes and dizziness can be debilitating and prevent you from doing much of anything. The root of cranial and facial pain can be caused by a variety of issues such as migraines or TMJ.

Cranial & Facial Pain FAQs

Cranial and facial pain refers to discomfort in the head, face, jaw, temples, scalp, or around the eyes. It can come from many sources, including muscles, joints, nerves, posture, or irritation in the neck and jaw.

Occipital neuralgia may feel like sharp, burning, or shooting pain that starts near the base of the skull and can move toward the scalp or behind the eye. Symptoms can vary, so a medical evaluation is important for the right diagnosis.

Cheek and jaw pain can be related to jaw joint irritation, muscle tension, dental issues, nerve sensitivity, posture, or neck movement. A physical therapy evaluation can help identify whether movement, muscle tightness, or joint mechanics are contributing.

The trigeminal nerve is often linked to facial pain because it carries sensation from much of the face. Trigeminal neuralgia can cause sudden, shock-like or stabbing facial pain, but not all facial pain comes from this nerve.

Physical therapy may help when cranial or facial pain is related to neck mobility, posture, jaw movement, muscle tension, or headaches that come from the cervical spine. Treatment may include mobility work, strengthening, hands-on care, and movement retraining.
